FREE COMMUNITY BOOK GIVEAWAYS
THOUSANDS OF BOOKS GIVEN AWAY ON THE WAI`ANAE COAST !
The love of knowledge and learning is expressed in many ways. One way of sharing is through books. Thousands of donated books were given to the Wai`anae Coast for Better Education Committee and distributed at the Westside Youth Festival at the Wai`anae shopping mall. The young people at the Children's tent worked very hard in setting up the tent, organizing books, helping children find what books they wanted and reading to the children. They were dedicated and extremely hard working!
The Wai`anae Coast kupuna also loved sharing books with book lovers at the Wai`anae Mall. They delighted in finding treasures and helping others pick out books to take home. They moved boxes, rearranged books, worked very hard and were cheerful and wonderful in every way. The free book giveaways showed how much people on the Wai`anae Coast love to read and share how much they value books. I continue to distribute free books in several sites such as a senior low income housing project, a youth program and a park facility and special community events.
The love of reading needs to start early and lasts a lifetime.

COMMUNITY CONFERENCE ON EDUCATION: "EYES ON THE FUTURE"
I was the chair of the Wai`anae Coast For Better Education, a community based group on the Leeward Coast. We organized a public forum on education where families, youth, educators and the community had an opportunity to share their concerns and solutions about Hawaii's educational system. We had keynote speakers, tons of door prizes and even refreshments. The entire conference happened with donations, volunteers and a very small budget! Breakout sessions were held and a final report was shared with the Board of Education and other organizations. The results of the conference showed that people care about education and are willing to become engaged in meaningful dialogue and action!
