EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
SPARK- SUPPORTING PARTNERSHIPS TO ASSURE READY KEIKI
& GOOD BEGINNINGS ALLIANCE- PARTNERSHIP FOR HAWAI`I'S KEIKI
Early childhood education programs give children a tremendous lead before they enter school. It is documented that children who have been in pre-school, have a greater rate of successful integration into the school system. Keiki Steps to Kindergarten, a pre- kindergarten program of INPEACE, was designed to familiarize children with their home school before they enter kindergarten.
I organized Keiki Steps to Kindergarten in several elementary schools on the Wai`anae Coast during a summer break session. I also promoted the importance of early education with the SPARK program to businesses, organizations, the faith based community and others.
The Partnership for Hawai`i`'s Keiki, a program of the Good Beginnings Alliance, was funded by the Annie K. Casey Foundation and implemented statewide to support efforts relating to early childhood education, health, and safety. I was the community facilitator for Wai`anae and coordinated workshops, and facilitated planning sessions using the Theory of Change model.
I also wrote a monthly column for three years, Na Keiki Korner, that was published in the Westside Stories, a free community newspaper distributed on the Wai`anae Coast to over 14,000 residents. Na Keiki Korner provided early childhood information and resources such as parenting tips, Native Hawaiian cultural practices, safety concerns, and how to support educational efforts as families, communities and professionals.
